Congratulations on buying Public Utilities for the Macintosh, winner of MacUser's Editors Choice Award. Public Utilities is the most comprehensive package of disk maintenance utilities available. This document lists some highlights of Public Utilities, and includes some last minute information which is not in the manual.
Public Utilities main features:
• The Prevention system extension scans your disk when your Macintosh is idle, looking for problems. It alerts you to problems before they develop into serious errors.
• Repair Disk fixes nearly any kind of damage on a hard disk or floppy disk.
• If the disk damage is too extensive to fix, Salvage will recover as many files as possible from the disk.
• Repair File extracts the text from damaged word processing files. Although you may lose the document's formatting, you will save the text.
• If you accidentally throw a file in the trash, Undelete can recover it. If Prevention is installed, Undelete has an even better chance of recovering your files.
• Fastback Express is the easiest way to back up the data on your hard disk.
• Optimize will defragment the files on your disk, so your disk runs as fast as it did when it was new.
• Public Utilities is the only program on the market which can undelete files even after it has optimized your disk. Other disk utilities are unable to undelete files after a disk is optimized. (Prevention must be installed at the time the file was thrown away.)
• Public Utilities can rebuild the desktop file on your disk without losing your file comments.
• See the Public Utilities manual to find out about all of our other features.
Recommendations for using Public Utilities:
• Please turn off any virus checking software before installing Public Utilities.
• Please turn off any background compression products before optimizing your disk. These include AutoDoubler, SpaceSaver, and More Disk Space.
• We do not recommend optimizing disks which use driver level compression, such as Times Two, Stacker, or eDisk.
• Please remove any copy protected software before repairing or optimizing your disk.
• Prevention will only scan the disk on a Powerbook when it is plugged into an AC power source.
• If you hold down the shift key, Prevention will not track files being thrown away.
• Public Utilities supports PLI array drives and the PLI QuickSCSI Nubus card.
• Prevention will not scan your disk at idle time if you are using an animated cursor, such as Now Fun or Click Change.
